About the Opportunity
Belfast Lough Sailability (BLS) offers a volunteering opportunity to all age groups and abilities and is based at the marina Carrickfergus Co Antrim. BLS has a fleet of 18 boats comprising of kayaks, sailing and power support boats with some craft specially adapted for those with disabilities – 6 hansa 2 man sailing dinghies, Searover power craft drop bow for wheelchair access and a Paralympic class sailing boat the Skud.

A charity run by volunteers, BLS operates an open session on Wednesday nights at 7pm April to September to offer sailing and on the water activities for those with disabilities, special needs groups book in during the week and Saturday mornings are also available.

BLS operates all the year round with winter training for volunteers Oct to March. We require large numbers of volunteers and very much appreciate their help and support. Our volunteers (40% have a disability) enjoy helping those with physical disabilities, sensory disabilities, learning difficulties, in a safe and fun environment sailing/boating out of Carrickfergus Marina and Harbour in the sheltered waters of Belfast Lough. Volunteers in the age group 14 to 24 are particularly welcome as BLS can be used for the millennium volunteering, Duke of Edinburgh and Presidents Award Scheme. New skills can be learnt and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certificated courses in disability awareness, sail and power qualifications are also offered to those who become regular volunteers with our group along with manual handling, kayaking, first aid and use of radio.

All safety equipment, waterproof clothing is supplied and it is an opportunity to enjoy water based activities and help others enjoy a sport and activity not so easily accessed by those with disabilities. We would love to hear from you. Our operation base is ‘the Cabin’ at the gates of Carrickfergus Sailing Club next to the Marina at Carrickfergus.

Volunteers are required for the BLS open session, every Wednesday evening 7 - 9pm (volunteers turn up at 6pm to prepare the boats and for shore support escort and buddy); BLS Volunteer training every Saturday - volunteers turn up at 10am finishing around 12.30pm.
