About the Opportunity
Overall project info:
On 11 November 2018, filmmaker Danny Boyle, is inviting the public to gather on beaches across the UK for an informal, nationwide gesture of remembrance for the men and women who left their home shores during the First World War.

Millions of people served in the First World War and many left by sea. Nerve Centre will be leading events at Murlough Beach, Co. Down on Sunday 11 November. Each event centres around the drawing of a large-scale portrait of a casualty from the First World War, which will be washed away as the tide comes in. In addition, the public will be asked to join in by creating silhouettes of people in the sand, remembering the millions of lives lost or changed forever by
the conflict.

What's happening on Murlough Beach?

Between 8.30am and 10.30am on Murlough Beach, the portrait of an individual from the First World War will emerge from the sand. And then, as the tide rises, be washed away as we take a moment to say a collective goodbye.

Join us for music from Mourne Community Choir and a reading of a new poem by poet Carol Ann Duffy, written especially for the event.

The public can also get involved in creating artwork in the sand using stencils of portraits on the beach.

Volunteer activity:

We're asking volunteers to help with the stencilling activity between 8.30am and 10.30am on the beach. This is a simple exercise that comprises of laying down a plastic board, weighed with wooden poles and allowing the public to rake.

Volunteers will receive complimentary tea and coffee in the cafe near the car park.
